AFRICME 07: Acknowledging and Addressing Barriers of Mathematics Education for an Inclusive Africa
The 7th Africa Regional Congress of ICMI on Mathematical Education (AFRICME 7)
Welcome to AFRICME 7
The Wits School of Education, in collaboration with the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction (ICME), welcomes you to the 7th African Regional Congress of ICMI on Mathematics Education (AFRICME 7). AFRICME was launched at the Wits School of Education in 2005 and aims at offering a forum for mathematics educators throughout Africa. AFRICME returns to its place of birth and will take place from the 15th of July to the 18th of July, 2025.
AFRICME 7 programme will offer an exciting combination of keynote lectures, paper presentations, symposia, and ‘How I teach’ presentations. The focus of these presentations will be on key educational developments and research in mathematics education in Africa in general. Participants will be able to meet with educators and experts from the continent to gain some insight into research that are being conducted in the different parts of the continent.
Wits School of Education is one of the schools in the Humanities Faculty of the University of the Witwatersrand and is located in the lush suburb of Parktown.

2. Second Announcement
This is the second announcement calling for proposals from mathematics education and STEM education researchers to be submitted for the African Chapter of International Congress of Mathematics Education (AFRICME 7) conference that will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2025. The types of contributions include Long Papers, Short Papers, Working Groups, Posters, and Symposia. Interested teachers are also invited to submit “How I Teach” or “How to Teach” papers to present during the Mathematics Teacher Professional Development parallel sessions. These submissions are not compulsory for participating teachers but are encouraged for the conference.
3. Conference Venue And Dates
The conference will be held at the School of Education, University of Witwatersrand School of Education, 27 St Andrews Road, 2050, Parktown, Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference will be on the 15th to 18th July, 2025. In addition, a pre-conference Teachers’ Day dedicated to Mathematics Teachers’ Professional Development will be held on Monday 14th July, 2025.

5. Registration Fees And Accommodation
The conference registration fee is R5500.00
The teachers’ registration fee is R2500.00
Students (under-graduate and post-graduate) will pay a fee of R1500,00 to attend/present at the conference.
Daily Registration for delegates will be R2000
The accommodation of delegates will be in the hotels near the University of the Witwatersrand School of Education. The nearby hotels are located around Braamfontein, Parktown, Rosebank, Greenside. The hotels can easily be located via the Web. Names of recommended lodges will be provided in the third and final Announcement. A special request has been made for delegates who choose to stay in university hostel accommodation. Note that delegates will pay for their any accommodation on campus and outside campus.
6. Mathematics Teacher Professional Development
The professional development for teachers’ programme is motivated by the need for the conference to impact community engagement particularly for the host country, South Africa.
The pre-conference Teacher’s Day will be held before the start of the conference
Thereafter, all teachers attending the conference can join the rest of the conference. There will be a Teacher Professional Development parallel session every day during the duration of the conference.
Experts will be sought to lead professional development sessions at Foundation Phase, Inter-Sen and FET phases
7. Conference Theme: Acknowledging And Addressing Barriers Of Mathematics Education For An Inclusive Africa.
Key subthemes are:
inclusivity and diversity within the mathematics classrooms during the AI era.
leveraging technology to enhance mathematics learning experiences in the AI age
the mathematics of data science in the AI age
cultural and socially aligned mathematics pedagogy (ethnomathematics, Indigenous knowledge) in the AI age
pedagogical issues in mathematics education and mathematics teacher professional at primary and high school
trans and inter-disciplinary STEM education
language and communications in mathematics education
mathematical modelling and computational thinking
use of textbooks as resources for teaching and learning mathematics
8. Scientific Engagement: What Can Delegates Submit?
Participants can submit for review; Long Papers, Short Papers, Working Groups, Posters, and Symposia. Interested teachers can submit ‘How I teach’ papers but this is not a compulsory requirement for teachers to attend the conference. All submissions will undergo blind review.
9. Publication Of Papers From The Conference
Arrangements have been made for publications in Special Issues of the following journals:
the African Journal of Teacher Education and Development (AJOTED) and,
the African Journal of Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (AJRMSTE)
the Computational Thinking Papers to Contribute to the AJRMSTE Special Issue.

11. Long Papers
4500-6000 words (excluding Abstract but including Reference list). Long papers should follow a format similar to articles/papers required by journals: i.e. abstract, introduction, literature review/conceptual framework, theoretical framework, methodology, findings, discussion and conclusion. Author details must be excluded for double blind peer review. Long papers are reviewed by at least 2 expert reviewers. Should a paper not be accepted for presentation as a long paper, it is possible that the author may be asked to reduce the length of the paper to meet the requirements and deadlines for a short paper.
12. Short Papers:
500 words abstract (including Reference list). Short papers should highlight preliminary findings and the significance of the research. Author details must be excluded for the double-blind peer review.
Short papers will be reviewed by 2 expert reviewers.
13. Poster Presentations:
500 words abstract (including Reference list). Poster abstracts should highlight preliminary findings and the significance of the research. Author details must be excluded for the double-blind peer review. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by 2 expert reviewers.
14. Symposia/Panel Discussion
These are discussions around a central theme or issue where different points of view, approaches, debates, or analysis of the same problem are presented. The paper should provide a short outline of the whole symposium. Details of each speaker’s contribution should be outlined, including how these come together to create a forum for discussion and debate.
Note: The symposium is not a platform for a collection of short papers presented under the auspice of one supervisor or researcher. 90-minutes is allocated for each symposia/panel discussion to enable audience engagement. Reviewers will provide feedback, but no revisions are required. 1 650 words (excluding Abstract but including Reference list). Abstract: 100 – 150 words

The Africa ICMI regional congress (AFRICME) was established in 2005 at the first congress. The congress aims to offer a forum for mathematics educators and those interested in mathematics education throughout Africa.
